Tzu Chi's Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council - or ECOSOC -- is a testament to the Buddhist charity's global humanitarian mission. After two years of relentless negotiations, last Monday, July 19th, Tzu Chi was officially recognized for its international relief work over the past 20 years. In the future, Tzu Chi representatives will have the privilege of participating in ECOSOC conferences; of requesting UN support for international relief projects; and of recommending economic and social policies for the UN and its member states.

Tzu Chi New York Chapter CEO, Zhang Jiduo: "They're currently in debate. It's should be sometime soon that a decision is made, so I need to go immediately to be there for the glorious moment."

Tzu Chi New York Chapter CEO, Zhang Jiduo: "Everything went smoothly, we 've been admitted!"

<>
11am on July 19, 2010 will forever be a landmark in Tzu Chi's history. After two years of unyielding dedication by a team of volunteers, Tzu Chi joined among the over 3,200 NGOS that have consultative relationship with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, or ECOSOC. Once the approval came through, Tzu Chi's New York volunteers rushed back in no time to the Chapter Office for a press conference with the local media.

<>
Tzu Chi New York Chapter CEO, Zhang Jiduo: "I am very happy for all the Tzu Chi volunteers, but at the same time over the past 40 years or so, I also feel that this is adding further responsibility for Master Cheng Yen. We still have a long way to go; I hope that through this platform, we are able to extend the Master's mission and responsibility, to spread the Great Love around the globe."

Tzu Chi volunteers from the US headquarters, Dallas Chapter, and New York Chapter, connected live with Master Cheng Yen at Tzu Chi in Hualien, Taiwan to revel the epic moment together.

Ring the victory bell and spread word that Tzu Chi has been granted special consultative status with ECOSOC. Indeed it is history in the making; for now, the burden we bear on our shoulders for the world has increased infinitely. My fellow Bodhisattvas, we should regard any suffering anywhere in the world as our own and bear responsibility for providing aid to spread the spirit of Tzu Chi.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) is a branch within the United Nations meant to help strengthen and facilitate communication between NGOs and the United Nations. Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation became an NGO in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC because the Foundation's spirit and principles were in accordance to ECOSOC's fundamental humanitarian goals. Tzu Chi can attend the United Nations' meetings, share its experiences, contribute to the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals, and also receive security assistance during relief missions from ECOSOC. Furthermore, Tzu Chi must submit an activity report every 4 years too.

<>
Tzu Chi has over 20 years experience in international disaster relief, offering support in 70 countries where volunteers have earned a reputation for always being the first to arrive at the scene and the last to leave.

<>
Volunteers got a first glance of suffering on a mission to help flood victims in Bangladesh in 1991. Over time, the eye-opening experience spurred future relief assistance such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile earthquake.

<>
Moreover on a grander scale, Tzu Chi's official entrance into the international arena will also let the world know that Taiwan may be a small island nation, but without a doubt has a big heart.

TC US Headquarters CEO, William Keh: "We can bring compassion and scatter Tzu Chi's seeds of love worldwide; at the same time it'll show the whole world Taiwan is place filled with goodness. Plus, it makes Tzu Chi a legitimate NGO in the international arena and people will identify love and goodness with our group."

<>
Tzu Chi's entrance into the international platform means the world to volunteers around the globe.
However, with more power, comes with greater responsibility and liability. A motto, Master Cheng Yen hopes all will abide to; because the more diligence, involvement and willpower, volunteers put into upholding Tzu Chi's philanthropy, the closer it'll be to the Master's wish for peace on Earth.
